Fans of ASSE and Girondins de Bordeaux may have already started to burn candles to see their favorite club stay in Ligue 1 at the end of the season. Despite bursts of pride ahead of the international break, the chances of them leaving Ligue 2 are slim if we look at the statistics.

In the last ten seasons, out of the 30 clubs classified in the last three after 13 days, L’Équipe recalls that 17 have finished in this same zone at the end of the season! Worse, 15 actually went down to L2 because two of them got away: Nîmes thanks to the stoppage of the season in 2019-2020 and Dijon thanks to the dams in 2018-2019.

The three who are currently at the bottom of the L1 standings – Girondins de Bordeaux, ASSE and FC Metz – therefore have a statistically one in two chance of holding on. The more optimistic will keep the “full bottle theory” in mind. As for the others …
