The ASSE goalkeeper, twice crowned French champion with the Greens, died on Saturday at the age of 81.

It is with sadness that AS Saint-Étienne learned of the death of René Donoyan at the age of 81, this Saturday morning.

Goalkeeper and ASSE player from 1957 to 1964, René Donoyan participated in the first Gambardella Cup final in ASSE history in 1958. Under the Green jersey, the one who had been nicknamed “the cheetah “because of his impressive horizontal relaxation, he played 28 matches and was crowned French Champion of the second division in 1963 then French Champion of the first division in 1964. Loaned thereafter to Cherbourg, Sochaux and Béziers, the native of La Ciotat has always carried ASSE and the city of Saint-Étienne in his heart.
