AS Saint-Etienne : ASSE: the salary-cap solution? | ASSE News

To limit the economic damage, ASSE leaders are said to be considering reinstating the salary cap for players.

Like many other Ligue 1 clubs, AS Saint-Étienne has been hit hard by the economic crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The funds of the club are at their worst since the matches are played behind closed doors and the Mediapro fiasco has reduced income from TV rights. To counter this financial crisis, Stade de Reims reached an agreement with its players for a cut in wages until June. A measure that could be adopted by the leaders of ASSE, with one detail according to information from the local media Radio Scoop. Roland Romeyer is betting instead on a return to the salary cap, which had been introduced until the departure of Christophe Galtier in 2017.

“This salary cap could be reinstated at ASSE. In any case, this is the wish of President Roland Romeyer. The reason is obviously financial: in the near future, the club will no longer be able to support the emoluments of certain players, considered “huge” by the management board “, Explains the media, which however believes that it will be difficult to apply this salary cap in the very short term. For good reason, the contracts of certain executives of Claude Puel’s workforce run until June 2023, and it will obviously be impossible to lower these salaries. This is particularly the case of Denis Bouanga, Harold Moukoudi and Gabriel Silva. As for Wahbi Khazri, Ryad Boudebouz and Miguel Trauco, they are linked with the Greens until 2022. The salary cap will therefore be an attractive option for the Greens, but certainly not immediately.
