The accounts are green in the transfer market. For ASSE, it is a necessity, to balance the rest of the expenses and income inherent in the life of the club. Since the people of Saint-Etienne do not have a shareholder rich enough to fill the gaps, the transfer window serves as a slider, when needed to bring in cash or, on the contrary, when the opportunity allows it, to spend more than usual.
A 2020 season to quickly forget for Saint-Etienne
Let it be said, Saint-Etienne will not (re) blaze tomorrow. Because despite the money won this summer, on the departure of Wesley Fofana to Leicester (€ 35 million excluding bonus), the last 2019-20 season was catastrophic, both through the fault of the players on the field (17th League 1, before the anticipated end of the championship), and by that of the health context, which later became a real economic issue. The ASSE, usually so virtuous, left some feathers in its last battle.
The Greens are positive over the past decade
On a longer timescale, the Foréziens generated 105.7 million euros in profits (excluding bonuses on operations), in 10 years of transfer window. Almost as much as the club’s budget for the current year. The past two seasons have been the most advantageous for the club, which has had only three loss-making years in the transfer market since 2011.
Fofana and Saliba, two record disposals for the Greens
Lois Diony (€ 10m) and Robert Beric (€ 7.5m) are historically the two most expensive recruits, while on the contrary, Wesley Fofana and William Saliba before him, brought in 65 million euros excluding bonus, leaving for Leicester first and Arsenal the other. The details of the last ten mecato of the Greens are summarized below.
