Communiqué from the city of Saint-Etienne:
Gaël Perdriau, mayor of Saint-Étienne, president of Saint-Étienne Métropole this week, nominated the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium to host football matches during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Last September, the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP) organizing committee decided to reduce the number of football stadiums that will host this global sporting event from nine to seven.
This is the reason why the organizing committee of the JOP 2024 organized this week the hearing of the representatives of each candidate metropolis.
A videoconference hearing for which the city of Saint-Etienne and Saint-Etienne Métropole organized this exchange directly from the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, by mobilizing representatives from the sports, associations, political and economic worlds, thus constituting a real team of Stéphanois and Metropolitans to nominate the mythical “Chaudron”.
For football you need the monument of French football. You need the “Cauldron” Gaël Perdriau
For nearly an hour and a half, Hervé Reynaud (1st vice-president of Saint-Etienne Métropole, president of AMF 42), Irène Breuil, (president of the CCI), Djamila Contrino, (president of Saint-Etienne swimming representing the associative world), Hervé Revelli, (six-time champion of France, member of the Association of Former Greens of 76, ambassador of major sporting events in the Stéphane metropolis), and Gaël Perdriau delivered a real match, through dialogue and constructive discussions, with the delegation of the JOP 2024 organizing committee made up of Tony Estanguet, president of Paris 2024, Etienne Thobois, general manager, Anthony Piqueras, site and infrastructure manager, Eric Mérand, site manager, and Joanna Sutherland , manager of sports operations.
The Stéphane team was also able to count on the support of ASSE with its president Roland Romeyer, its trainer Claude Puel, the player Coralie Digonnet, the players Romain Hamouma, Mathieu Debuchy, Jessy Moulin, and champions such as Anouck Jaubert ( European climbing champion), Elodie Clouvel (Olympic vice-champion in modern pentathlon), Jérôme Elbrycht (X-games gold medalist, vice-world champion in handisports work-board water ski lift), or even Loïc Perrin (former captain of ASSE), and demonstrate his ability and know-how in hosting international sporting events.
Gaël Perdriau presented and developed the eleven good reasons (like 11 players on the field), plus one, the twelfth man, the Stéphanois themselves, for the organizing committee of the JOP 2024 to retain the candidacy of the metropolis of Saint-Etienne and of its emblematic stadium
The president of Saint-Etienne Métropole particularly insisted on the history, spirit and soul of Saint-Etienne whose values beautifully espouse those of Olympism before concluding, addressing the members of the organizing committee: “You want to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games a great celebration for everyone. A global event that will celebrate the national heritage with stadiums at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, or a horse-riding competition organized in Versailles? Go to the end of your logic. For football you need the monument of French football. You need the “Cauldron”. You need Geoffroy-Guichard. You need Saint-Etienne”.
