It’s now official. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, French professional clubs can offer short-term contracts to players to end the 2019/2020 season. A decision acted on Wednesday by the government, meeting at the Council of Ministers, through an ordinance.

Three clubs involved

The measure, presented by the Minister of Sports Roxana Maracineanu, allows in particular an extension of contract for a maximum duration of six months from the initial date of the end of the season. “The ordinance gives the possibility to these clubs, players and coaches to extend their contractual relations in order to finish, at best, these few competitions which are concerned and corresponding to the 2019/2020 season,” is it specified in the report of the Council of Ministers. Thanks to this measure, which has been previously agreed with the social partners of male and female professional sport, the fixed-term employment contracts of sportsmen or salaried professional trainers may be extended, by amendment. “Supposed to play in the national finals and the Champions League in the coming weeks, AS Saint-Etienne, Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain are concerned.
