AS Saint-Etienne : The reasons behind the difficulties of As Saint-Étienne | ASSE Live News

A historic club in the French championship, As Saint-Étienne is going through difficult times. Indeed, the Greens are the red lantern of League 1 with only 12 points on the clock, after 18 days of competition. The worst record since 1988 and for which the causes are of several orders. What then explains this unenviable situation? Decryption!

A delicate transfer window

Without doubt, the quality of the recruiting of this first half of the season partly explains the difficulties of AS Saint-Étienne in keeping the competition high. Indeed, the ASSE transfer window has been, until then, a real fiasco. Because, except Juan Ramirez from Liverpool, all the new arrivals are unknown names. On the other hand, the ace Saint-Étienne let go of major players such as Kévin Monnet-Paquet, Papa Abou Cissé (return from loan) and Jessy Moulin. These transfers from ASSE are obviously due to the club’s financial crisis.

An inexperienced team

From the above, the ASSE transfer window has failed to recruit quality players capable of helping the club secure a European place next season. On the contrary, the people of Stéphane have little experience and display a fairly low level of competitiveness. As proof, in 24 games played (in all competitions this season), AS Saint-Étienne conceded 39 goals, against only 17 scored. In addition, the team has recorded so far: 13 losses, 8 draws and 3 wins.

An inconclusive Claude Puel parenthesis

Coming to the club’s rescue after unsatisfactory results from Ghislain Printant, Claude Puel fell short of the hopes he embodied. Because, during his two seasons at the head of the team, the news of ASSE will have been marked by a series of misunderstandings between the French coach and the managers of his locker room. His lack of flexibility and the shelving of some of the group’s top names, such as Wahbi Khazri, has exacerbated the tensions between his locker room and him. This lack of symbiosis has therefore greatly contributed to the current decline of the club. Despite the departure of Claude Puel and the shock therapy announced by Pascal Dupraz, the incoming coach, this deep crisis will not be able to dissipate any time soon. Geoffroy Guichard’s audience will therefore have to wait a little longer.

A sale that struggles to materialize

Of all the factors underlying the Greens’ woes, the ASSE sale seems more of a concern. Indeed, the current co-presidents have affirmed their willingness to hand over. However, no serious project is on the horizon. With this expectation, it is not obvious that departing leaders are really involved in the proper functioning of the team.
