As part of the 21st day of Ligue 1, AS Saint-Etienne hosted Olympique Lyonnais in Geoffroy-Guichard. Beaten in Strasbourg (1-0) last weekend, the Greens wanted to pay the scalp of the enemy Lyonnais history to afford a breath of fresh air in the standings. On the Lyon side, it was absolutely necessary to win to reduce the sails on PSG in the standings. For this derby, Claude Puel aligned a 4-3-1-2 with the duo Abi, Hamouma in attack. Rudi Garcia opted for his usual 4-3-3 with the formidable trio Kadewere, Depay, Toko Ekambi.

ASSE got off to a good start and got the first chance of the match. On the left, Hamouma distilled a good cross for Moueffek, whose shot spun right next to it (1st). OL reacted quickly with Depay, whose strike was repelled by Moulin (3rd). The start was intended to be totally unbridled and Kadewere saw his volley well captured by Moulin (5th). Quite logically, OL opened the scoring. Following a poorly negotiated corner by the Stéphane defense, Kadewere closely deceived Moulin (16th).

OL pushes AS Saint-Etienne

Rudi Garcia’s men missed the break on a superb strike from De Sciglio which hit the crossbar (23rd). Olympique Lyonnais mastered the debates and Toko Ekambi, well served by Guimaraes, stumbled over Moulin (33rd). In the hard, Saint-Etienne cracked again three minutes later. On a free kick hit by Dubois, Marcelo with a header lodged the ball in the net (0-2, 36th). After returning from the locker room Claude Puel decided to launch Bouanga and Nordin. The latter infiltrated the Lyon defense and released a heavy strike that hit the crossbar (55th). The Greens let their chance pass and OL took advantage of it.

On a free kick hit by Dubois, Marcelo still cheated Moulin with his head (0-3, 59th). On a chair, Olympique Lyonnais proceeded against and Kadewere, well served by Depay, quietly adjusted Moulin (0-4, 68th). The chalice to the dregs for the Greens who conceded a fifth goal on a free kick from Depay deflected by Bouanga in his own net (0-5, 83rd). Far from being satisfied, Rudi Garcia’s men missed the sixth goal with Toko Ekambi, whose curled shot was deflected by Moulin (84th). Thanks to this twelfth success of the season, OL returned to two lengths of LOSC and PSG in the standings.

Man of the match: Kadewere (8): the Zimbabwean striker quickly distinguished himself with a beautiful volley well captured by Moulin (5th). Very enterprising at the start of the match, the former Havre is rewarded for his activity with a goal following a corner from Depay (0-1, 16th). The person concerned was a constant danger for the Stéphane defense in the first half. Proof of his good form at the moment, he took advantage of an excellent service from Depay to offer himself a brace (0-4, 68th). The derby is particularly successful for the main protagonist who continues his great rise in Ligue 1. Replaced at the 85th by Slimani

Saint Etienne

Mill (3) : the 35-year-old goalkeeper could hardly do anything on the Lyonnais goals tonight. Often left alone by his defense, he allowed his team not to take more goals by winning several times in front of Depay (5th) or Toko Ekambi (32nd, 72nd, 84th) for example. He could have done better on Lyon’s fourth goal from Kadewere (68th)

Sissoko (2) : on his right side, the young Saint-Etienne side suffered a lot. Often clumsy in his interventions, he has failed to cope with the constant movements of Toko Ekambi and others. Replaced at half-time by Nordin (2). The striker brought explosiveness to his team for a few minutes (a strike on the 56th bar) before slowly sinking like all his partners.

Camara (3): Like his center-pivoting teammate of the day, the 22-year-old defender suffered a lot on Sunday. Although cleaner in his interventions, he often made placement errors that put his team in difficulty. An alignment problem with Kolodziejczak first, but mainly a communication problem with Sissoko. Both players constantly letting the flock of Rudi Garcia creep up behind their backs.

Kolodziejczak (1) : in a very inexperienced team with a lot of young players, the former Lyonnais had to be a leader and reassure his partners. In the end, Kolo ’will have been quite the opposite. Often overwhelmed in his interventions, he only suffered in the face of Depay or Kadewere. Even in the raise, the 30-year-old defender was not at ease. It was he who lost a ball that could have been expensive without the intervention of Jessy Moulin (32nd). It was he too who was dominated in the air by Marcelo for the break goal and then again on the 3-0 goal by the same Brazilian. He was also the one who was mystified by Kadewere on the fourth goal. In short, a match to forget.

Trauco (2) : Known to be a constant threat on his left lane, the Peruvian full-back was never able to make a difference on his side. He suffered a lot in the face of the many climbs of Dubois. And inevitably when Trauco is forced to defend, his usefulness is much more limited, his contribution almost nil. Replaced by Saidou Sow. The 18-year-old defenseman didn’t show up.

Moueffek (3.5) : from the top of his 19 years, the young midfielder had to take charge of Bruno Guimaraes while supporting his suffering right side as often as possible on the right side. But the task was impossible for him. Wanting to be everywhere, Moueffek got lost in this encounter not managing to really cover his area effectively. His move to the right lane in the second half will not have changed anything. He could have opened the scoring (2nd) but his shot fled the frame.

Gourna-Douath (2.5) : the number 33 from Saint-Etienne suffered more than anything else in this match. Jostled by the Lyon environment, he was dominated in all areas of the game content to undergo the opposing attacks for 90 minutes but is it really his fault? One thing is certain, the young player of only 17 years old is not likely to forget this first derby.

Gabard (2) : the 20-year-old midfielder seemed overwhelmed in this derby. For his second tenure in Ligue 1, Gabard had to deal with a Caqueret of great evenings. Replaced at half-time by Denis Bouanga (2). Came into play to bring more danger to Anthony Lopes’s cage, the Gabon international was of little use. Like his team, he just chased after the ball, negotiating the only balls he had rather poorly. He even scored against his camp.

Neyou (2) : Positioned at the top of a very inexperienced midfielder, the former Laval will never have existed in this game. He went through the game without being able to bring to his team. Too uninteresting when his team was chasing the ball, he also had a hard time showing his advantage when he had the ball. Replaced by Youssouf. The former Bordeaux player could not bring to a team already at the bottom of the hole.

Abi (2) : Associated with Hamouma at the start of the meeting, Abi will have been of little use to his family. Taken in the air by Marcelo as well as Denayer, the young 20-year-old forward was unable to weigh his back on the game. He lost a lot of balls and had too many technical inaccuracies. In his role of depth striker, he has not once picked up speed a Marcelo or Denayer. Replaced by Adil Aouchiche. The former Parisian hasn’t really had the chance to show off.

Hamouma (3) : the French striker appeared to be alone on the attacking front. Weaned from the ball for most of the match, Romain Hamouma did his best to help his team by running more races. When he had the ball, he used it skillfully, giving good balls to Moueffek and Aby in particular. But that won’t have been enough. Too lonely, he ended up going through the match without any impact, a bit like his team.

Olympique Lyonnais

  • Lopes (5): the Lyon goalkeeper had absolutely nothing to do this evening. A quiet derby as rarely for the Lusitanian doorman.

  • Dubois (8): the Lyon right-back was a permanent danger for the Stéphane defense in the first act. Its numerous climbs were often punctuated by dangerous centers. Decisive passer on the second goal scored by Marcelo (0-2, 36th). The French international was able to take advantage of a certain freedom in his lane to bring danger offensively. The defender offers himself a second decisive pass on a free kick on the third goal scored by Marcelo (0-3, 59th). A full encounter provided by number fourteen tonight. Replaced at the 88th by Bard

  • Marcelo (6.5): the Brazilian central defender was not worried by the Stéphane strikers in the first act. Very comfortable in the air, he took advantage of an excellent free kick from Dubois to score Lyon’s second goal (0-2, 36th). The Brazilian’s beautiful evening continued with a new header from a free kick from Dubois (0-3, 59th). A derby that he will not soon forget.

  • Denayer (6): the Red Devil had an extremely quiet opening act. Apart from the center of Hamouma badly judged at the start of the match, the person strove to apply in his raises. Very serious in his positioning, the Belgian international spent a very calm derby.

  • From Sciglio (6): the Italian left side did not hesitate to project forward and combine with Toko Ekambi. The transalpine international could have scored a superb goal but his shot hit the crossbar (23rd). Very clean in his game, the player who belongs to Juventus was interesting in his lane.

  • Caqueret (6): the Lyon environment has stood out for its ability to combine well with its partners in the short game in particular. His reading of the game allows him to make the right choices. Technically very clean, he did not hesitate to participate in the pressing with his partners. A little less prominent in the second act.

  • Mendes (7): the former Lille is the metronome of this team. Able to regulate the Lyon game, its transmissions break lines. Very valuable in the orientation of the game with very little waste in its cross sections. Faced with the game, the Brazilian midfielder is simply a very interesting player. Following the favorable scenario of the match, he played without forcing. A beautiful copy made by the number 23 Lyon. Replaced at the 85th by Diomande

  • Guimaraes (6): the Brazilian midfielder who had a complicated start to the year, remains precious in the conservation of the ball. Technically comfortable, the international Auriverde was able to scratch a few balls in the midfield. Could have been a decisive passer for Toko Ekambi (33rd). Author of a loss of ball which could have been prejudicial on the occasion of Nordin (55th). Less prominent in the second act, the Brazilian seemed to lower his foot on the physical level. Replaced at the 89th by Gusto

  • Kadewere (8): see above.

  • Depay (7): the Lyon captain got the first Lyon opportunity of the match but his heavy shot was repelled by Moulin (3rd). Very active on the front of the Rhone attack, his corner provoked the opening of the score of Kadewere (0-1, 16th). Always on the move, the Dutch international took advantage of his freedom to touch the ball a lot. Decisive passer on Lyon’s fourth goal scored by Kadewere (0-4, 68th). In all the good shots of his team, his free kick deflected by Bouanga causes Lyon’s fifth goal (0-5, 83rd).

  • Toko Ekambi (4,5): the Cameroonian striker was the least visible of the Lyon attacking trio in the first half. The Indomitable Lion loses his duel against Moulin on an excellent service from Guimaraes (33rd). Upon returning from the locker room, he tried to be more active but his initiatives were not always very happy. His rolled shot is well deflected by Moulin (84th). Replaced at the 85th by Cherki
