AS Saint-Etienne : Editorial: ASSE comes down to earth | ASSE Live News

ASSE had been on cloud nine for a few weeks. With convincing victories against OM (0-2), Strasbourg (2-0) and Lorient (2-0), the Stéphanois relished. And it was not the draw conceded at the end of the game in Nantes that was going to turn everything upside down. Stade Rennais took care of it.
Youth is not enough. Admittedly, Claude Puel’s group is talented and has proven it (Mason, Fofana, Rivera, Youssouf, Neyou among others) but against a well-established Rennes team, ASSE has shown its limits. A 3-0 slap at home, the first since February 5.
Panic is not yet in the ranks of Saint-Etienne. 4th in the standings after 5 days, the young Greens have made an excellent start to the season, well beyond the expectations of the majority of supporters. Claude Puel does not have to be ashamed of this slap at home, he who took over the team last October, saved them last season and has managed to instill a conquering state of mind in a historically young team.
This team is still missing a few things, certainly one or two elements to be able to claim to beat opponents of the caliber of Stade Rennais, which is positioned as a credible contender for the Champions League this year.
These two elements must already be present in Claude Puel’s list. However, the degreasing must be finished. Palencia and Trauco could find a base this week. Khazri and Boudebouz are still starting, while Guendouz has already left Etrat. It is therefore not impossible to see new faces arriving if the previous names leave. In any case, that would be desirable.
Despite the heavy defeat on Saturday, a sweet smell floats in the air of Saint-Etienne. That of the hope of a successful season.
