AS Saint-Etienne : which French clubs with Lille in the Europa League? | ASSE News

The LFP Board of Directors has announced the end of the Ligue 1 season and validated its final ranking. But the vagueness still reigns over the three teams that will represent France in the Europa League. There are several scenarios, seven to be precise.

The LFP whistled the end of recess on Thursday and recorded the end of the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons. The rankings were established and the decision was made to award the title of champion to PSG (L1) and Lorient (L2). But the vagueness reigns concerning the teams qualified in Europa League. Didier Quillot has indeed left the door open to the possible holding of the finals of the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue in early August behind closed doors. Which could be a game-changer.

In France, the 4th in the Ligue 1 ranking is directly qualified for the final phase of the Europa League. With the final classification acted this Thursday, it is the LOSC. The winner of the Coupe de France also qualifies for the final phase of the C3 while the winner of the Coupe de la Ligue obtains a ticket for the second preliminary round of the C3 (Q2).

But if the winners of the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue are already qualified for the C3 via the championship (or for the C1), then it is the 5th and 6th in Ligue 1 who qualify for the C3. A scenario that could happen if the finals are played and if the PSG (already qualified in C1) wins in the final of the Coupe de France (against ASSE) and the Coupe de la Ligue (against OL).

Below, here is the final Ligue 1 ranking for 2019-2020

  1. Paris
  2. Marseille
  3. Reindeer
  4. Lille
  5. Nice
  6. Reims

As perfectly summarized by OGC Nice on its site, there are thus 7 possible scenarios to determine the two French clubs that will accompany LOSC in C3:

Case 1: None of the finals can be played = Nice (pools) and Reims (Q2) are qualified.

Case 2: Only the final of the Coupe de France (ASSE-PSG) can be played = Nice is European, but must wait to know if Paris wins to know if it goes directly into pools. If the Greens are successful, the Gym will go to Q2.

Case 3: Only the final of the League Cup (OL-PSG) can be played = Nice goes whatever happens directly in pools. If Paris wins, Reims is also European (Q2). If Lyon wins, the Lyonnais will go to Q2.

Case 4: If Paris wins the 2 national cups = Nice in the group stage of C3 and Reims in Q2.

Case 5: If Paris wins “only” the Coupe de France = Nice in pools, Lyon (winner of the Coupe de la Ligue) in Q2.

Case 6: If Paris wins “only” the Coupe de la Ligue = ASSE (winner of the Coupe de France) in pools, Nice in Q2.

Case 7: If Paris does not win either of the two cups = ASSE (winner of the French cup) in pools, Lyon (winner of the League cup) in Q2.
